Against The Tide: The CNC Team That’s Pushing Sustainability In a High-Carbon Industry

Discover how this CNC brand is reshaping the landscape of modern woodworking through environmentally friendly strategies.

We’ve all seen how CNC milling machines make cutting and engraving look fast, efficient, and easy. It’s so productive that most communities today don’t offer as many opportunities for traditional woodworkers brandishing tools and chisels.

However, debates continue on how CNC machines add to our carbon footprint. And the long-term effects of employing large-scale production with CNC machines seem inevitable, given how much energy and materials it consumes.

But our consumer economy is not ready to abandon CNC technology altogether. It’s too convenient and cost-effective, at least in the short run. The only compromise that appears may be to include more sustainable components in the production process.

A CNC company based in the UK is leading the way in incorporating environmentally friendly practices while serving a vast clientele with excellence and quality services. Recently, we got to reach out to the team at Masters CNC and take a closer look at the strides they’re making toward sustainable CNC wood cutting services.

Who are Masters CNC?

Before we dived into their green CNC milling strategies, we learned a little bit more about the company.

Masters CNC is a company that’s been around for over a decade now. Based out of the cozy village of Dunton Green in Sevenoaks, Kent, they serve customers from all over the country.

We learned that the team enjoys expertise in everything from wall paneling and edge-banding to laser cutting and modern plywood cabinetry. But their trade truly shines when it comes to CNC cutting. Precision woodwork and quality workmanship remain a trademark of their brand. And customers all over the county have ordered customized designs, traditional woodwork, and high-end milling services.

However, the green and sustainable practices embraced by Masters CNC are what truly make them stand out.

Focus on Sustainable Strategies

A quick interaction with the team revealed that environmentally friendly plans have always been part of their approach to CNC services. And they ensure that this approach remains present in every part of their production process, from sourcing to waste management.

Sourcing Sustainable Wood

Masters CNC puts a lot of emphasis on gathering raw materials that are harvested responsibly. Their woodwork can range from simple spruce shelves and cabinets to sophisticated Brazilian teak benches and Solid walnut boards.

As far as we’ve seen, all their wood comes from FSC-certified suppliers and regions. The FSC, by the way, stands for Forest Stewardship Council. It’s an international organization that works towards the responsible plantation, management, and harvest of wood and forest products.

Given the wide range of wood materials they work with, sourcing all their materials from FSC-certified suppliers is a major accomplishment.

The team also mentioned that they may consider greener materials like bamboo in the future. That’s going to be hard to source regularly in the UK. However, any small effort to overhaul highly commercialized wood is worth appreciating.

Investing in Energy-efficient Machines

Conventional CNC milling machines are not built to save energy. Instead, the primary focus is on power and milling capabilities.

Masters CNC seeks to get around this problem by opting for energy-saving machinery and infrastructure wherever possible. Most of their primary CNC machines are high-spindle designs. These CNC machines cut through materials faster, meaning less energy is used for the purpose.

One particular CNC machine has an energy recovery component. From what we observed, this one retains the heat energy produced during the CNC cutting. And this energy can be directed toward other heat-related work within the workshop. They also plan to invest in hybrid CNC machines that use plasma cutting to save some of the power needed for intensive milling services.

All of their lighting solutions in the working area are energy-efficient LED tubes and bulbs. And most of the corner lights work on motion-sensing technology. So, they switch off automatically and save energy unless someone is moving about.

Limiting the Use of Toxic Finishes

Most wood finishes and machine lubricants contain high concentrations of alcohol or formaldehyde. Toxic ingredients like these release fumes into the air or make their way into drainage systems and even cause ill effects in humans.

The team at Masters CNC conducted in-house research to focus on green lubricants and more eco-friendly finishes. Even as we talked, one of their more experienced members continued using linseed oil to apply the fine finishing touches to a wooden signboard.

All of their finishes use products proven to contain low amounts of VOC. This strategy ensures that the air around them remains clean and their production does not emit excessively harmful fumes into the surrounding area.

Impressive Waste Management

As if all their sustainable strategies leading up to this were not enough, they have an excellent process of managing and disposing of waste.

Most of their smaller wood pellets and leftovers are kept aside in a corner. These supplies, once accumulated, get sold to other vendors who require smaller bits of wood for their work.

The bulk of the wood waste generated during milling gathers as sawdust. They give away the gathered sawdust to households or businesses nearby who wish to use it for composting. Other woodworkers nearby may also take the sawdust to be used as fillers or paste for their products. Many neighborhood households also collect the dust for use as mulch in their farming and gardening.

This process of recycling, upcycling, and reusing the wood milling debris allows for eco-friendly disbursal of waste.
