Founded by Megha Rao, the Dhirana Academy of Classical Dance is dedicated to inspiring, educating, and guiding students in the divine classical art form of Bharatanatyam. Located in Bentonville, Arkansas, Dhirana’s mission is to bridge the gap between society and classical dance forms, catering to individuals of all age groups and backgrounds.
Dhirana Academy of Classical Dance, under the visionary leadership of Megha Rao, offers a transformative Bharatanatyam education experience that prioritizes mental health and the cultivation of skills beyond traditional dance techniques. As the Artistic Director and Founder, Megha Rao fosters a supportive and inclusive atmosphere for students from various backgrounds, integrating contemporary technology, innovation, and modern approaches to dance education.
With her unique vision and extensive experience, Megha has transformed Dhirana’s curriculum. She emphasizes the benefits of Bharatanatyam by aligning the mind, body, and soul, following the principle of Bharata’s Natyashastra “Yatho Hasta thatho Drishti, Yatho Drishti thatho Manah Yatho Manah thatho Bhaava, Yatho Bhaava thatho Rasa.” This approach nurtures essential life skills such as concentration, focus, time management, confidence, presentation abilities, and teamwork while promoting healthy habits like cardiovascular health, body coordination, flexibility, muscle strength, and balance.
Under Megha’s expert guidance, Dhirana’s comprehensive curriculum offers students an all-encompassing experience that includes workout classes, music, tala, theory, and storytelling. Megha’s unwavering commitment to her students is evident in the numerous performance opportunities, masterclasses, and cultural exchange programs she provides. As an accomplished choreographer and producer, Megha has created critically acclaimed productions like “The Exile King,” “Navarasa Margam,” “Ardhanareeswaram,” and “Bala Tale of Kanha.”
Holding a master’s degree in Dance from Bangalore University and boasting 20 years of experience in Bharatanatyam, folk dance, and Odissi, Megha instills her personal core values of providing students with experience, exposure, and guidance in both the technical and spiritual aspects of Bharatanatyam. Her expertise and vision have led to fruitful collaborations with organizations such as Ra-Ve Cultural Foundation, Walton Art Center, Crystal Bridges Museum, The Momentary, Bentonville School District, and Downtown Bentonville Incorporation. Megha’s recent collaboration, “The Jungle Book,” premiered at Walton Arts Center, and her production “Bala Tale of Kanha” won the prestigious Artist 360 grand prize.
Megha’s dedication to her students’ well-being is evident through the nurturing atmosphere and support system she has established at Dhirana Academy. By addressing the challenges in Bharatanatyam education, Megha ensures that students receive the necessary encouragement and resources to grow and succeed in their artistic journey. Her commitment to promoting the mental health benefits of Bharatanatyam within the community is a testament to her innovative leadership and unwavering devotion to her students.
