Sean Gorman Shares his 5 Favorite Things about Black Series HQ19

After spending 2 months living off the grid in central Vermont last fall, Sean Gorman feels like he really had a chance to get to know the Black Series trailer. Most owners will probably already know a lot about the company and the trailers, but he wanted to share the things that really shined to him after spending so much time with it.

5) The Poly-block Hitch- At first Sean was a bit intimidated about getting the trailer hitched up correctly, but he found the poly-block is easy if not easier than the traditional ball hitch. He quickly learned how to get it attached by himself without any help. Pulling with a poly-block will make owners never want to go back to the ball. It’s abnormally quiet but beyond that, there is no slack while driving.

4) Solar that works- Being off grid and having a good solar system on board proved to be key. On sunny days, Sean could typically get a full charge, and on the duller days most of a charge. Owners do have to be mindful of their power usage. Major power usages like the A/C inverter, and microwave have to be kept under control, but he never felt inconvenienced by power. One thing that did help Sean was parking in a place that can get direct sunlight, even slight coverage by trees will limit charging.

3) LT Truck tires- the 265/75r16 light truck tire is a huge advantage over a traditional trailer tire. Being able to run a moderate tire pressure on road (60psi) and then being able to lower the pressures off road (35psi) made the trailer handle with more control, but also significantly lowered the vibration and motion of the trailer’s contents. When a compliant truck tire is combined with a suspension system that is soft, it makes for a very good ride. Plus, it’s a common tire size and may even fit the towing vehicle, making spare tires even more useful. And don’t forget- it also allows the tire to be repaired in the field.

2) Diesel Powered Furnace- while these small units have become popular in vans and Overlanding builds, it hasn’t really become popular in trailers. There’s a reason they are popular throughout the world, and it is because they work… really well. According to Sean he was easily able to keep the trailer warm in frigid temperatures into single digits, and he only needed to fill the diesel tank every few days. Sean stated the furnace sips the fuel and the heat output is top notch.

1) Full size bathroom- Nothing beats a long day at work than being able to go home and take a hot shower. Sean is very tall (6’7”) and normally has to contort himself into a trailer restroom to shower. The HQ19’s full size shower with on demand hot water never let him down. It’s so well designed with lots of storage and places to keep things. According to Sean this bathroom is definitely a benchmark for all trailers at this point.

Black Series makes interesting and highly capable trailers. Sean’s experience proved that they are durable and robust enough to be taken off the pavement, but also that they pull straight and the things that make them good off-road, make them better on road. Many of the attributes should make them last a long time and provide many years of service. Current owners rave about their capabilities and Sean understood why “It truly is a home away from home that provides the comfort and function that only an off road trailer can provide”
