Alison was a Marketing Director at a tech startup and was let go last May of 2022. She claims the work place was toxic, and has since started her own marketing business to create a better quality of life.
While her severance wasn’t enough to pay the bills for longer than a month, she had some savings so she decided to take a break after her high pressure job where she was working directly with the company’s investors, who she described as “hostile and dismissive”. At the time, her mom was getting treated for a serious health condition, and she and her husband had lost their childcare for their 3 year old son.
“I was relieved that I didn’t have to go back to a job that had become very stressful, but I was also worried about finding another full time job and experiencing the same burnout and disrespect. I had never experienced that type of treatment before in my career. I didn’t want to risk being in that situation again.
During the time I spent fully focused on my mom and son, I realized that I didn’t want to go back to another toxic environment. My priorities were now to focus on family and health while still having a career I loved. I had spent so much of my career climbing the corporate ladder, only to realize in the end it’s not what I wanted.
One day I watched a webinar on how to start your own business and I knew I had to do that. I was still really passionate about marketing and have over 12 years of experience, it was a no brainer.
I was at home with my son for the first 4 months of starting my Marketing Agency because we couldn’t get child care. I built my website and took sales calls while my son was napping, usually a few hours a day. With this time, I was able to get hyper focused and land my first two clients. Things became a lot easier when my son started daycare. In March of 2023 (less than a year later) I surpassed my previous Director of Marketing monthly salary in MRR.
The best part of this new career path is the freedom. I vow to work no more than 4 days a week and I never cancel a scheduled spin class. This balance allows me to prioritize my health, my family, and service my clients better because of it.
While I have new stresses that I didn’t have working for someone else, I see everything I do in my business as an investment in myself, which is extremely motivating. I’m a very experienced Marketer with a proven track record in B2B tech, and I love being able to offer my strategic mindset and skills to other businesses that want to invest in their growth.”
