Nature gives all people innate strength and ability. But not everyone can open them up. Our heroine understood from childhood that sport will always be present in her life. Meet Ekaterina Kuznetsova – a successful athlete, an international class judge of the highest category, the co-Head judge of the World Championships, and the Secretary of the Competitive World Wakesurfing Association.
Katja inherited her love for a sports lifestyle and sports in general from her father, who brought up many Olympic Champions during his sports career. It is not surprising that from the age of 4 the girl began to do rhythmic gymnastics. The first great successes and hopes inspired and prophesied a brilliant future for her in this sport. But a serious back injury she received at the age of 8 affected plans for the future.
Strong character did not allow the young athlete to give up. The first big victory after the injury was the victory over herself. As a means of physical rehabilitation, swimming, tennis (getting into the Junior WTA rating) and equestrian sports (Master of Sports Candidate and vice-champion of Russia in dressage) were chosen.
But her interests were not limited to sports. The girl actively combined physical activity with painting, literature, music and theater. She got 2 higher educations: the Faculty of Philology of St. Petersburg State University and Stockholm School of Economics (Sweden).
Ekaterina subconsciously felt that professional sports would return to her life. This happened after several years of successful work as the head of the Protocol of all the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Sochi-2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which not only left an indelible mark on the girl’s life, but also accidentally led her to a relatively young, but very extraordinary kind of sport —wakesurfing.
Purposefulness, self-discipline, endurance and hard training quickly led the athlete to well-deserved victories – prizes in the US Open Championship (2016), Kyiv City Swell Open Wake Surf Championship, WRS (World Ranking System) CWSA King of Wakesurf Italian Open and the Russian Championship (2019), at the Ingrad Wake Surf Championship, the World Championship and the All-Russian Championship (2021). In addition, Ekaterina is a four-time European champion (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021). Overall I have more than 50 poduim awards and probably I’m the most recognized Russian wakesurfer so far.
These achievements allowed her to become the Secretary of the CWSA in 2020, an organization that is actively involved in the development of wakesurfing around the world. The girl became the first non-American woman to receive such an honor. The honorary position gave Ekaterina membership in the executive committee of the organization and the right to judge the World and European Championships, other wakesurfing competitions of various levels.
Moving to the United States in March last year was a forced and at the same time balanced step. It didn’t really change anything in the athlete’s lifestyle: competitions, work at the CWSA, judging, coaching and, of course, family, children, household chores. But ambitious goals for the near future were added to everyday plans – the further development of this absolutely American sport, the creation of her own wakesurfing school and her own unique training methodology.
If someone is talented, then they are talented in everything. The strong character and extraordinary abilities of Ekaterina Kuznetsova will undoubtedly lead her to new achievements and the successful implementation of all her goals.
