International Medical Aid (IMA) is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to provide high school, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate students with unique opportunities. They can participate in healthcare internships abroad in Peru. The new internship program offers participants the chance to gain clinical and direct patient care hours while working in major hospitals in Cusco, Peru, and engaging in community outreach programs, including hygiene education programs and community medical clinics.
Through healthcare internships, students will have the opportunity to gain valuable exposure to various medical specialties and shadow physicians, PAs, and other healthcare providers in a busy, international hospital setting. The program will also include clinical simulation sessions and global health education lectures to help participants learn more about the Peruvian healthcare system and how it differs from the U.S. model of care delivery.
Furthermore, the program offers cultural tours and adventure treks, which will enable interns to experience Peru’s beautiful, scenic areas, including historic cities like Cusco, Inca Trails, the Galapagos Island, and the Amazon rainforest, and the iconic site of Machu Picchu. Learners will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of the destination, allowing them to learn medical Spanish and some indigenous languages, such as Quechua.
High-school students (16 years or older), undergraduate students (pre-medicine, pre-physician assistant, pre-nursing, and pre-dentistry), graduate students (medicine, PA, nursing, and dentistry), post-baccalaureate students, and gap year students are eligible to apply for the program.
The organization maintains a 100% safety rating, having had no incidents with staff or interns during its programs. Participants will lodge in gated communities with 24/7 security and access to comprehensive travel, accident, and health insurance. Additionally, in the unlikely event of exposure to infectious disease, all interns will have access to post-exposure prophylaxis.
“Peru is incredibly diverse and vibrant with the third-largest population in South America. We are thrilled to offer high school, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate students the chance to participate in healthcare internships abroad in such a beautiful country. We are confident that this program will provide valuable experience to our participants and allow them to immerse themselves in the Peruvian culture while also providing urgent medical care to those in need.” says IMA’s founders.

– Session 1: June 3, 2023 – June 17, 2023
