Breaking Barriers: University of Prishtina’s Female ICT Students are Leading the Charge

In Information and Communications Technology, women in Kosovo are breaking barriers and leading the charge. The University of Prishtina is at the forefront of this movement, with a growing trend of women pursuing careers in computer science and computer engineering.

Leading the Way: Female ICT Students in UP

The percentage of women in ICT studies worldwide is relatively low, but in a small country like Kosovo, the trend of young girls who aim for careers in computer science and computer engineering, which were once considered a “man’s world,” is seeing significant year-on-year growth.

In the University of Prishtina’s Computer Science Department, 50.7% of students are women. In the computer engineering department, 55.9% of students were women in the 2021/2022 academic year, with an even higher percentage of 61.8% in 2020/2021.

This is a significant change from 10 years ago when in the 2012/2013 academic year, only 28.2% of students in the computer engineering department were women. In the following year, this percentage was even lower at 26.8%.

Triple the Impact: Female ICT Students in UP Outperform EU

The University of Prishtina’s female ICT students are outperforming the EU average, which has a share of 17% female students in ICT, while UP has a staggering 56%. This is a testament to the efforts made by the university and the country to encourage and support women in the field.

UP is providing young women with the tools and resources necessary to succeed in a previously male-dominated industry and, as a result, is producing highly-skilled female graduates who are making their mark in the ICT industry.

The Future of Internet Access: Kosovo Sets the Standard

The widespread availability of internet access is critical to the growth and development of the country and its economy, providing citizens with access to a wealth of information, resources, and opportunities. In Kosovo, the future of internet access is bright, with 98% of the population having access to the internet. This is a significant improvement from the world average of 64.4% and sets Kosovo apart as a leader in the field.

The Rector’s Remark

Prof. dr. Qerim Qerimi, the rector of the University of Prishtina, recognizes the vital role that technology plays in Kosovo’s growth and development.

“Technology development is one of the main sectors through which Kosovo can develop, considering that our young population is our country’s gem. This is also combined with the outstanding talent of our youth and the market’s needs, considering that the number of companies that offer computer science services continues to grow. As a result, supporting these programs is a strategic priority, to which we will give our great attention and support.” – stated Qerimi.

The University of Prishtina is committed to supporting the growth and development of its students, particularly in the field of ICT, to ensure they have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.
