Amal Marjani Bennett-Judge has been interested in the energy business since she was five. Her aunt, Margie Lewis, started nuclear energy with $10,000 with Department of Energy contracts. As the first black nuclear engineer to graduate from Georgia Tech, Margie sold her business, Parallax, millions of years later. Bennett-Judge, inspired by her family’s energy resilience against all odds, became inspired by her stepmom’s sister with solar.
While at Howard, she interned at the Obama White House, US Senate Majority Leader, Sierra Club’s environmental justice initiative, and renewable energy finance. During a meeting on Wallstreet, she met a previous Chief of Staff of the US Senate Energy Committee. He then mentors her to assist in helping bring energy investment to HBCUs. Years later, they reconnected again; He sponsored Bennett-Judge to attend the United Negro College Fund conference. From there, she connected UNCF with Harvard Business Review and planned an event to help get HBCUs retrofitted for a bright horizon from April 20 to April 21 at the Gathering Spot in Washington, DC. With the Reduction Inflation Act, green becomes the new black with solar in rural and urban communities.
Bennett-Judge remains inspired by the resilience of her own family. When faced with the criminal justice system due to an abortion, she learned to have personal sustainability by always putting her mental health first. She not only advocated for herself, but she advocated for others. She now works with the City of Atlanta, Y Combinator, AUC, and Howard to create a second chance program with solar jobs and green enterprises. She hopes to work with NREL and DOE to expand opportunities to 37 other HBCUs and LMI households. When life gave Bennett-Judge limes, she made limeade. She tells her amazing adventure of becoming with her book Audacity of Amal at Barnes & Noble College.
