PHOENIX – For more than 16 years, Arizona readers have relished the opportunity to hear from award-winning authors from around the world thanks to the Literary Society of the Southwest.
With more than 500 members in Phoenix, Pinnacle Peak, and Tucson, the Literary Society has created a network of individuals who are not only avid readers; but also deeply care about advancing Arizona’s literacy.
“The value of literacy is more than a book,” said Literary Society Board President Laura Huser. “We advance and impact the cause of literacy through advocacy, funds awarded, and opportunities for volunteer involvement.”
The Literary Society has granted over $200,000 to nonprofit literacy programs and student scholarships in Arizona in the last 16 years through net proceeds from memberships and donations, and In 2022, members met the challenge goal to raise an additional $25,000 for grantmaking, doubling the grant budget to $50,000.
These funds provide support for these high-performing literacy organizations and programs:
Make Way for Books, Read Better Be Better, Literacy Connects, Girls Scouts, Southwest Human Development Friend of the Scottsdale Library, and SciTech Institute.
“My membership means more than enjoying lunch with like-minded people or hearing an author reveal wisdom and personal insights that enhance my appreciation of their work. Of importance to me, I know that a portion of my dues supports literacy in our communities. If you’re literate, you can understand information, move from poverty to a more secure future, be a greater participant in your community . . . and read to a child,” said Literary Society Member Ardie Evans.
The 2021-2022 Literary Society season closes with luncheons from May 10-13, 2022 featuring award-winning author Colum McCann.
McCann will share what inspired him to write his novel, Apeirogon, a timely story of finding peace and community in times of war.
With a vision to bring the joy and lifelong benefits of reading to all, Huser hopes that every member’s personal enrichment from reading and connection extends to enriching others.
Arizona readers who want to attend upcoming luncheons and make a difference in their community can find out more about Literary Society membership at literarysoc.com/Join-Today.
