Yoga Is Lowering Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors.

Yoga, an ancient mind-body practice combining physical, mental, and spiritual elements that originated in Asia, has been proven in multiple studies to be useful in decreasing cardiovascular risk factors and lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes. According to the researchers, the goal of this meta-analysis was to assess the data and produce a reasonable pooled assessment of yoga’s benefit when compared to exercise and no exercise. The findings revealed that those who practiced yoga improved their risk factors for cardiovascular disease more than those who did not, and that yoga had an effect on these risks that was comparable to exercise.

Yoga was associated with significant improvements in each of the primary outcome risk factors measured when compared to no exercise: body mass index was reduced by 0.77 kg/m2 (measured as a “mean difference”), systolic blood pressure was reduced by 5.21 mm Hg, low-density (bad) lipoprotein cholesterol was reduced by 12.14 mg/dl, and high-density (good) lipoprotein cholesterol was increased by 3.20 mg/dl. Secondary endpoints showed substantial reductions as well: body weight decreased by 2.32 kg, diastolic blood pressure decreased by 4.9 mm Hg, total cholesterol decreased by 18.48 mg/dl, and heart rate decreased by 5.27 beats/min. However, there were no improvements in diabetes-related markers (fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin). Meanwhile, the study says Yoga has the potential to be a cost-effective treatment and prevention method due to its low cost, lack of expensive equipment or technology, the potential for increased adherence and improved health-related quality of life, and potential accessibility to a larger population.

People with normal cholesterol have the highest risk of heart attacks and strokes. That’s why you could go to your doctor and yet be on the verge of a heart attack or stroke. It’s not just about cholesterol. The majority of heart attacks and strokes are caused by blockages of less than 50%.
